Just before posting some very nice pictures of her latest work in progress, Deborah asked the question "Do You Like Your Quilt Guild?" I actually don't belong to a guild and the reasons have mostly to do with knowing in advance that I could never meet the goals they set. It is frowned upon, so I have heard, if you don't keep up with your charity quilts. I am all in favor of charity, and charity quilts too for that matter, but I know there would just never be enough hours. Guilds aside, though, I do belong to a small group of quilting friends that gather once a month to sew, share, snack and discuss. I love all of these women and consider them dear friends. They enrich my life greatly and it is hard to express sometimes just how great a blessing they are. All that being said, to a woman they are traditional quilters. That means they cannot give me feedback on my art quilts. Example: "But how do you wash that?" Me(patiently) "I don't, it is for the wall. I don't usually wash my paintings." So, it would be a good idea for me to interact with art quilters on a regular basis, which is what I hope to accomplish here and elsewhere.
Thank you to Mel and the other Jen for commenting on the last post. (The question was about using commercial fabric or not in your art.)I understand perfectly that in Mrs. Mel's quilts it must be her own fabric. Here is an example of another quilt artist whose work I like,Ruth McDowell, and I don't think it takes away from her work when she makes use of commercial fabric because of how she uses it (it's not the focus, just a bit of texture or whatever).

Wow. It's so cool to inspire other posts. I'm glad you thought to respond. I agree about charity quilts. I give time and money to charities, but I am not particularly inspired specifically to make quilts for charity. And I resent feeling obligated to do such. Good for you for making your own rules and for finding a small group of quilters that you enjoy.
My guild does a lot of charity quilts, but there are no requirements. We hold 3 quiltathons a year and they just get done! I practice my machine quilting by quilting some of them. That is the extent of my contribution, but am proud of all that the guild does.
I've done my share of charity quilts and it will be a real relief not to be pestered (read "made to feel guilty") about doing more. Not all guilds are big into charity quilts though. I don't recall hearing anything about them at Canyon last month, but perhaps I have finally developed selective deafness, LOL.
I have been looking for sites like this for a long time. Thank you!
