Work Space

Someone asked a while back about seeing pictures of the sewing room/ studio since I had gone to the trouble of cleaning it up. Mind you, I haven't had any celebrities drop in lately, but here are the pictures anyway. Clean is a relative thing, but this is as good as it gets for me. I have tried three or four different rooms, and this is the current one. I still actually move all over the house, yard, and garage as needed depending on what I am doing. Sometimes I just need that really bright light from the kitchen skylight and the space on that huge table. Sometimes I want to take "yard pictures" and I see potential art quilts or computer generated images for fabric (I am experimenting with that). If I am dyeing fabric, then that has to be outside or in the garage. On the RARE occasion that I do handwork, it might be in the family room with my husband while he watches TV. So, I daydream about having a fantastic studio one day, complete with longarm quilting machine, like THIS. In the meantime I make use of what I have. If I waited for everything to be "perfect" I'd never make any art at all, and think of all the joy I would miss.

I would like to advise you against a longarm machine. Really, you will regret the purchase. You will end up quilting everyone else quilt and having no time to make your own. And the long arms really don't allow the scale of design that makes the work look its best. I have had the opportunity to test every one of the big name brands out there and still feel that the best is the home machine where you needn't use up a whole room to get a quilt quilted.
If you are at all creative, then you don't want to fall into the longarm trap and be distracted by the need to justify buying it.

Thanks, Mrs Mel. I guess that makes me feel better about not affording the longarm :) It looks so fluid when you watch someone do free motion on the big machine, I am surprised that it is limited. If I bought one, I would be very selfish and use it just for me :) I don't want to start a quilting business! Jen

If I had that space as a studio, I would never be seen in public ever again!

Looks like you make good use of your workspace! I always think I want a long arm, but then I realize they cost over 10,000 bucks and would take up a whole room! I'm glad to read what Melody said, because I've always be suspicious that they would be hard to use in my kind of work.

Hey I agree with Mrs. Mel, too. She's one smart cookie and an inspiration to us all! I gave up the idea of a longarm, BUT I thought I'd try that new Bernina with the stitch regulator. I'm sure there are others who will love it, but I just couldn't seem to get the hang of it. My work was very jerky and unsure. Oh well, another toy I can do without!
